Funerary Urn

Barbara Mitnik 1918-2012

My grandmother passed at the age of 93 years. I was asked by my family to create a funerary urn for her remains. This was as much an honor as it was a challenge. I wanted something that was more than a simple vessel as her ultimate resting place. For this particular piece I incorporated a cast glass element created through my distinctive casting process. The internal decoration is composed of small branches, twigs and organic matter. Once the composition is set I add a layer of silver foil just before pouring glass into the form. The silver foil effectively wraps the ash of the plant matter as it vaporizes resulting in a stunning ghost like botanical composition.
